How to Treat Acne Caused By External Factors

Our last post - 3 Reasons Your Makeup is Causing Acne, focuses on acne that results from external factors. Acne can stem from external reasons - too much makeup, using the wrong skincare products, polluted environments, or internal reasons - hormonal imbalances, poor diets, genetics. Different causes of acne require different treatments to treat it correctly for a long-lasting result.

Acne caused by external factors affect the skin’s epidermis - the topmost layer of skin that is exposed to air and vulnerable. As such, your dermis health (or, inner layers of skin) may be drastically different from your epidermis’ health. For example, I experienced acne and severe breakouts even though I have dry skin. Taking medication for hormonal imbalances or oily skin will not treat my skin and even aggravate it by drying my dermis layers out - which can lead to a tight, painful sensation and even the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hence, external treatment of the skin through facials and a proper skincare routine is key to treating such acne.

The Cocoon Foam Mask Deep Cleansing Facial was the obvious choice for my acne.

The treatment started off with an extraction that is key to clearing up any acne and skin congestion. Extraction is the process of clearing a clogged pore so that it can breath again, and remove congestion from the skin. Without it, your pores remained clogged by sebum and bacteria buildup - which not only causes inflammation and painful pustules, but your skin cannot absorb the active ingredients used in the skincare to treat your skin. Given how small acne is and how easily bacteria spreads, it is important to leave extract to an experienced beautician who can perform the job without leaving scars.

Next, a manual massage is performed to detoxify my skin. Focusing on the acupuncture points on the face, an aesthetic draining is performed. This detoxifies the pores and facial tissues. Your cellular metabolism is also revived to improve your skin’s ability to protect itself from external pollution, bacteria and impurities.

The Cocoon Foam Mask is the focal point of the treatment. Using a thick layer of foam to raise the skin’s temperature by 6 to 10 degrees Celsius, your skin is better able to absorb the active ingredients of the mask applied. The increased temperature also increases your skin’s blood circulation and aids the detoxification process. Your skin is revived with a healthy glow after the treatment.

After the treatment, it is important to use the right home care to continuously heal the skin and give it nutrition. This will ensure that the effects of your facial is prolonged, and your recovery process is faster.

The first step of my healing routine is the 300 Velvet Skin Mattifying Cream. I used this as my moisturiser.

Many people who suffer from oily skin and acne often avoid using moisturisers to prevent more “oiliness”. However, oily skin is caused by sebum produced by the skin, which is different from moisture needed by the skin. Not using a moisturiser will not only dehydrate your skin cells but may increase sebum protection as the skin wants to protect itself from drying out. A good moisturiser for oily skin should restore moisture and hydration to the cells while reducing the sebum produced by the skin.

The 300 Velvet Skin Mattifying Cream contains active ingredients - Papaya Fruit Extracts, Brown Algae Extract and a Carbohydrate Complex to refine the pores and mattify your skin. After using this product, my skin is evidently less bumpy and my skin feels less tight.

I then applied the 301 Perfecting Pore Refiner to reduce pore size for a smoother and clearer complexion. Containing Sage, Virginian Witch Hazel, Thyme and Yarrow, I see a more refined complexion, smoother skin and tighter pores.

Next, I use the D-510 SOS Anti-Impurity Gel on the pimples to absorb excess sebum from my skin. It contains an LPM (lipase, protease, maltodextrin) complex, which has a keratolytic effect on the skin. Salicylic acid removes the dead skin cells and clears block skin, and Glycolic acid refines the skin, stimulates cell activity and reduces acne.

In the mornings, I use the 2 Creamy Soft Mask Morning Cleanser to deep cleanse my skin. The 2 Creamy Soft Mask contains Kaolin, a natural clay – this helps to absorbs excess sebum and dirt from the skin. Your skin regenerates itself through the night and excretes impurities and oil - and a good cleanser to clean your skin is important. It also contains Ivy Extract to stimulate the skin’s metabolism, which is important in the morning for your skin to protect itself from external aggression. Strawberry Extract, Allantoin and Vitamin B6 refines, soothes and soften the skin while giving you a clear, fresh complexion.

As you can see, my skin quickly cleared up after the facial. The extraction took a longer time due to the large amount of congestion and some spots were still red for a few days. However, with the home care, the bumps were smoothed out, my pores became smaller and my overall skin improved drastically.

Some people who suffer from acne for a longer period of time without proper treatment may suffer from acne scars. In my next post, I will discuss how I lightened my acne scars for a brighter, clearer complexion.
